Acclaimed for its expertise since 1960, Groupe Berkem produces alkyd resins for paint and varnish manufacturers. But are you familiar with the characteristics of this resin in the composition of paint ? Let’s first find out what alkyd resin is before detailing the benefits of using this binder in the manufacture of paint for professionals in the construction, manufacturing and timber sectors.

Understanding what alkyd resin is

Alkyd resin is a binder made from several elements such as vegetable oils, raw materials from organic chemistry and petroleum solvents. There are 3 types, classified according to their oil content:

  • Short oil, having an oil length less than 45%;
  • Medium oil having an oil length of 45-55%, mainly with soya bean oil;
  • Long  having an oil length more than 55%, mostly using linseed or soya bean oil.

Alkyd resin is used in the manufacture of paint and varnish for the construction, timber and manufacturing sectors. The addition of alkyd resin to your paint means you can maximise the performance of your products and perfect the finish.

What are the benefits from using alkyd paint?

Now that you have a clearer idea of what alkyd resins are, let’s explore the various benefits from using this binder in your paint:

  • They represent the best compromise between durability and flexibility: they can be used everywhere indoors, including in the kitchen or bathroom, as well as outdoors. They are therefore compatible with most materials, as long as they are prepared properly.
  • Easy to apply (brush or spray), they provide a tight, properly finished result without streaks
  • Alkyd paints are water resistant and easy to keep clean using water.
  • They are environmentally friendly and less toxic. This is because alkyds have a higher renewables content and do not require the use of biocides.

It should be noted, however, that alkyd resin-based paint will take a little longer to dry than other types, such as acrylic.

Groupe Berkem will help you choose alkyd resins for your paints which meet your needs and the nature of your project. You can find a wide range of products that will adapt to the problems encountered by professionals in the construction, manufacturing and timber sectors in order to find the best possible balance of formulations and obtain the desired result.

Explore the range of resins Lixothan for construction professionals. This range is used for pastel and white paints and stains, and demonstrates high UV resistance. Lixoglyp is another range supplied by Groupe Berkem which offers a wide choice of oil contents: from high solid extract to long oil content, for matt or gloss paint.
